Sound control is determined primarily by mass and decoupling — but cavity insulation plays a meaningful supporting role. The right product in the right assembly improves STC ratings without adding cost or thickness. Mineral wool outperforms standard fiberglass due to its higher density and open-cell structure.
Mineral wool AFB delivers superior sound absorption vs standard fiberglass at the same cavity depth. In a wood-frame assembly with resilient channel and 5/8″ drywall, AFB achieves STC 50–56.
R-15 HD fiberglass batts provide better sound attenuation than standard R-13 in the same 2×4 cavity. A practical compromise where mineral wool cost is a concern.
Mineral wool in joist cavities with a floating floor is the standard approach for IIC-rated floor/ceiling assemblies in multifamily.
Mineral wool AFB is the best cavity insulation for sound. Its density and open-cell structure absorb sound energy better than fiberglass. But the assembly matters most: mass, decoupling, and air sealing all contribute more than insulation alone.
Wood-frame wall with mineral wool AFB, one layer of 5/8″ drywall each side: STC ~44–46. Add resilient channel: STC ~50–54. Double drywall + resilient channel: STC 55+.
