01

Code-required in zones 3–5

IECC 2021 requires R-38 attic insulation in climate zones 3 through 5, covering most of the contiguous United States — from the Mid-Atlantic through the Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest. R-38 is the spec on more new homes than any other attic value.

02

Significant energy savings over R-30

Upgrading from R-30 to R-38 cuts attic heat loss by approximately 20% in equivalent conditions. On active projects in zones 4–5 where R-30 was previously the standard, R-38 often qualifies for utility rebates.

03

One-layer installation

R-38 batts can be installed in a single layer in standard 2×12 or engineered I-joist attic framing — no cross-layering required. For retrofit over existing insulation, unfaced batts go directly on top of whatever's there.

Common questions.

What climate zones require R-38?

IECC 2021 requires R-38 in climate zones 3 through 5. Zone 3 includes much of the Mid-South and Pacific Southwest; zone 5 includes New England, the Upper Midwest, and Pacific Northwest. Zone 4 (most of Virginia, the Carolinas, and inland California) also requires R-38.

Should I use R-38 or R-49 in my area?

Zone 3–5: R-38 is code-compliant. Zone 6–8 (northern states): R-49 or R-60 is required. See R-49 → If you're unsure, call us with your zip code and we'll confirm.

Can R-38 be layered over existing insulation?

Yes. Unfaced R-38 batts can be laid perpendicular over existing blown-in or batt insulation in attic floors. Facing should face down only if you're placing the first layer on the ceiling drywall.

Is there a minimum order?

No minimum. Order 5 bags or 500 — volume pricing is available on larger orders.
