How to Order Insulation as a Contractor: A Step-by-Step Guide

From calculating quantities to coordinating delivery, here's the complete workflow for ordering insulation efficiently on any job.

Step 1: Know exactly what you need before you call

The most common mistake when ordering insulation is calling without a full product list. This leads to back-and-forth, incorrect products being shipped, and delays when a substitution doesn't meet spec. Before you call a supplier, have the following for each product you need:

If you have any of these as "I'm not sure," resolve them before calling. Suppliers can advise on product selection, but they need your framing and application confirmed first.

Step 2: Calculate your quantities

The simplest approach is to calculate net wall/floor/ceiling square footage and divide by the bag coverage. Add 10% for waste.

Walls: Measure linear feet of exterior wall, multiply by ceiling height, subtract for windows and doors. For a typical 2,000 sq ft single-story with 8' ceilings, exterior walls might be 800–1,200 sq ft after subtracting openings.

Attic: Attic square footage roughly equals the floor plan footprint. A 1,500 sq ft home has roughly a 1,500 sq ft attic to insulate.

Floors over crawl space: Same as attic — equal to the floor plan square footage.

Use the bag coverage table from the manufacturer or use our online calculator to convert square footage to bags for each product.

Step 3: Confirm delivery logistics before committing

Before finalizing your order, confirm:

Getting this confirmed before the order is placed avoids the most common delivery-day problems.

Step 4: Place the order and get a written confirmation

Once you've agreed on product, quantity, delivery date, and location, ask for a written confirmation — even a text or email summary works. This confirmation should include the product specs, quantity, and delivery date. It protects you if the wrong product shows up.

At Prestige Insulation, we send an itemized invoice before delivery that you can verify against your order. Review it when it arrives and flag any discrepancies before delivery day.

Step 5: Receive and verify the delivery

When the delivery arrives, verify before you sign off:

If anything doesn't match, flag it immediately with the driver and contact the supplier before the truck leaves. Resolving discrepancies before the truck is gone is much easier than after.

Step 6: Pay at delivery

At Prestige, you pay after you've verified the delivery — via Zelle, Venmo, or check. This means you're not paying upfront for something you haven't seen. If there's a shortfall or wrong product, it's resolved before payment. This is how wholesale should work.

Common ordering mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Ordering the wrong width. 15" vs. 23" is the most common error. Confirm your stud spacing before you order. If you have mixed spacing on one job, order both widths.

Under-ordering and needing a second delivery. Always add 10% to your calculated quantity. The second delivery costs time and sometimes delays the job waiting for stock.

Not checking product labels on arrival. Suppliers pick a lot of orders. Verify that what's on the bag matches your spec before installing.

Ordering too early with no storage plan. Insulation takes up significant space. If the site isn't ready to receive, order closer to install date rather than storing product in ways that can compress batts.
